Dot3D™ Tip of the Month:
Need to measure the clearance distance between a wall/surface and another part of a scene? You can use the perpendicular measurement feature for clearance calculations right in Dot3D! To do this, add a surface annotation to the wall/surface you want to measure from, then go back to the Measure tab to pull perpendicular measurements right out of the recognized plane automatically.

Video Clip: Modeling from Dot3D™ scan data in Autodesk Revit
Dot3D + Revit remains one of the most powerful and successful workflows for many of our clients in AEC, MEP, and beyond. Please click here for a quick new video snippet highlighting the ease of 3D modeling directly from DP scan data in Autodesk Revit! This seamless workflow is powered by direct .RCS export from Dot3D Pro.

Dot3D™ Tip of the Month:
When registering multiple scans, make sure to crop out stray data between overlapping scans. Areas of overlap are typically captured with much higher accuracy and detail in one scan vs. the other, and therefore it is very important to remove the lower accuracy points for a clean and accurate final merged data set. This cropping can be achieved in Dot3D or in third party multi-scan tools.

Dot3D™ Tip of the Month:
Pay attention to the scene fitness bar! This circular green indicator around the start/stop button in Dot3D gives you an idea of how well Dot3D is tracking through the scene / if you are at risk of losing tracking. A full green circle means Dot3D is tracking well (good distance to target, recognized geometry in scene). An emptier circle means Dot3D is struggling to maintain tracking and you should be careful, slow down, and/or readjust your distance/trajectory.

Geo Week 2022: The intersection of geospatial + the built world
We're glad to be welcoming back several great events with the launch of GEO WEEK 2022 this Sunday in Denver, CO. Our CEO Brian Ahern will be in attendance and available for meetings throughout the conference. Please contact us to schedule a time to meet during the show.

You'll also find our resellers at Laser Scanning Europe in booth 627 on the expo floor. Please click here for more info on their participation.

Dot3D™ Tip of the Month:
Take a practice scan (or multiple) on the job site. A quick dry run through a scene can be very helpful with preparing for the real thing. Take this opportunity to analyze where you might want to place some targets, where you'll be starting and finishing your scan, which areas will be more challenging, and how many scans will be required in total. You can even take practice scans while your kit is warming up (for DPI Kits with recommended warmup requirements).

Dot3D™ Tip of the Month: Utilize background geometry! It's recommended to take advantage of any and all geometry in your scene to assist with tracking, even areas you don't necessarily care about and/or will be cropping out later. For example, if you're scanning an object, it may make more sense to place it closer to the corner of a room, vs. right in the center of an empty space.

Impulse Partners' Digital Design and Fabrication Accelerator
We are pleased to report that DotProduct has recently been accepted into Impulse Partners' Digital Design and Fabrication Accelerator. This program is designed to target strategic opportunities to:
  • Conceive, produce, and construct projects using digital tools.
  • Integrate BIM from project concept to execution stages.
  • Deploy new methods of production, inspection, and repair
(ex. robots, drones, 3D scanning, 3D printing, etc.).
As you see, this is a very appropriate fit for what we do and we look forward to working with Impulse Partners and their network to expand on our own efforts to achieve all of the above with our solutions.

New shorter range capture settings now available for LiDAR L515
Today's release of Dot3D 4.1.2 brings some new capabilities to Dot3D for Intel® RealSense™ LiDAR L515 users! A new Laser Power slider option is now available under Settings > Sensors/Cameras. Lowering the laser power now enables closer range capture with the L515 (min. range of 0.4 m). These changes are only recommended for close range capture / tracking needs. For traditional room-scale scanning and longer range capture, this setting should normally be left alone.

Dot3D™ Tip of the Month: Keep your shadow out of your 3D camera's view! Dot3D will mistake this as motion in your scene and you will struggle to maintain tracking. For situations where this is particularly challenging, we recommend the DPI Light Kit to avoid the issue entirely.
