August 2021: An Update on DotProduct and Intel® RealSense™
News has recently been confirmed that Intel® has decided to restructure some of their Intel® RealSense™ business unit. While we do not expect this to change anything for DotProduct and our clients in the near term, please expect some changes moving forward. As direct partners and providers of Intel® RealSense™ technology, we are here to make sure you are fully informed. So, here's our understanding of what you need to know:
News has recently been confirmed that Intel® has decided to restructure some of their Intel® RealSense™ business unit. While we do not expect this to change anything for DotProduct and our clients in the near term, please expect some changes moving forward. As direct partners and providers of Intel® RealSense™ technology, we are here to make sure you are fully informed. So, here's our understanding of what you need to know:
- All Intel® RealSense™ cameras remain currently available for order from both DotProduct and Intel®. While certain products will be discontinued in the future (as indicated below), Intel® plans to provide a 6 month end of life (EOL) and Last Time Buy period for these specific products. So, in many ways we expect availability and support for these cameras to remain business as usual for the next 4-6 months.
- The Intel® RealSense™ D400 series (D455, D415, D435, D435i, D410, D430, and D450 stereo cameras/modules) WILL BE CONTINUED. We are very glad to confirm this as these represent some of our leading solutions for outdoor 3D scanning in sunlight. This will continue to be the case moving forward. We are glad to continue support for the D400 series.
- The Intel® RealSense™ LiDAR Camera L515 is expected to be discontinued by Q1 2022, as its 6 month EOL has been confirmed. We plan to continue to carry and support the L515 for at least that long. If you are looking for an alternative to the L515, we would highly recommend the new DPI-X (or DPI-10) kits. Starting at only $995 USD, these calibrated kits provide the best overall experience and resulting data of any of our supported cameras for versatile interior scanning. While they may not have the same long range as the L515, they are much less inhibited by challenges with ambient lighting and difficult surfaces, which in most cases more than compensates for the shorter range. While their form factor is larger than the L515, these kits do benefit from more ruggedization for industrial uses, and can still be utilized with tablets or phones (via the DPI-X + iOgrapher Multi-Case).
- Intel® is also announcing 6 month EOL for the Facial Authentication (F450) and Tracking (T265) product lines this month. These products were never supported by DotProduct, so this should not affect our business in any way.
- Please stay tuned regarding additional 3D camera support in Dot3D™. As a hardware-independent software company, we have never been limited to just one hardware manufacturer, and that will remain the case moving forward. There is always something new in development, and we will continue to provide powerfully effective software solutions for a growing range of current 3D camera options.
